"Released to freedom"
My file will say when I leave here
I will carry a black garbage bag
Containing all that remains of my old life
Everything that I own to begin my new life
Nothing will fit me anymore
Not my old clothes
Nor my old life
Where will I start?
I will have a name and a number in my hand
It will be my salvation
I will pick up the phone and call
Flat Out

Flat Out receives funding through the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health and Ageing to provide housing and support to women exiting prison. However, this funding falls short of the level of funding needed to provide an appropriate, responsive service. Flat Out does not receive funding to provide material aid to women exiting prison for things such as public transport costs, Methadone, medication, clothing, toiletries and child related costs. The majority of women coming out of prison are homeless, and have lost not only their homes, but also all their possessions. Flat Out is unable to assist women with removal and storage costs and so many women lose everything they own, including clothing, personal papers, photos, identification, driver’s licence and documents relating to children. All of these items cost money to replace. Some, of course, are irreplaceable. Whilst Flat Out staff spend a considerable amount of time trying to attract funds to provide assistance to our clients, we are unable to provide the level of service that we would like. Flat Out is greatly appreciative of cash donations that allow us to assist women to re-establish their lives. Sadly we are unable to accept donations of goods as we do not have any storage space in our office. All donations to Flat Out are tax deductible. |
